Spring has finally sprung and one of my favourite plants has come to life, the Camellia. Arguably one of the most beautiful plants when in flower it's surprisingly underrated by many gardeners.
Camellias are ericaceous plants meaning they need acidic soil conditions, however, if you don't have the right soil conditions they will happily thrive in a container meaning almost anyone can grow these beautiful plants. Flowering in Winter-Spring they add a much needed burst of colour when not much else is happening in the garden.
Just imagine this bursting into life after a long and dreary winter..............
Available in a wide variety of colours including Pink, Red and White there's a Camellia for almost any scheme. From cottage gardening to modern styles they are surprisingly versatile, I've seen a White flowering variety used to great effect in an ultra modern urban garden.
If growing in containers a regular feeding with an acidic fertiliser will keep your plants happy. A position in light shade is preferable for most varieties although we've seen many growing happily in full sun with a little extra care.
The payoff for a little bit of extra work is you get rewarded with the most beautiful flowers year after year. Go on, treat yourself!
